Harlequin Production’s “What the Constitution Means to Me”

Originally published on social media on November 3rd, 2024

Hours later as I sit here and contemplate this play, my mind is overwhelmed with thoughts, yet my mouth remains speechless. I am in awe of this play and every clever nuance and powerful statement. I am a political scientist by college education, and yet I feel that I learned so much about the United States Constitution. Light was shed on a document that has allowed for much darkness, and how we can keep the light shining bright throughout America by remaining conscious of political issues, advocating for what is right, and remaining supportive as community members. I cannot replicate everything she said, and honestly wish I could sit in the audience again to soak in even more of the messages. Today was the last show at the Harlequin, but I’m grateful that the show’s creator recorded her performance and made it accessible on Amazon prime. I watched the trailer for it today, and I can already tell that the full essence of the show is captured. You can bet I’ll be watching it again, especially as I pray for our nation during election week.

One of the things the Harlequin did today was give everybody a copy of the United States Constitution. I loved flipping through the pages and following along with the debates. It was truly thrilling AND fun!

Seeing this particular play today tugged at my heart for two reasons:
1). Today was the last time the Harlequin could share the play’s impactful messages, remind people to vote, and that we ARE the people and WE have a full right to our democracy. We have the opportunity to make changes to our Constitution that better reflect who we are TODAY.
2). Today was All Saints Sunday at my church, and I lit a candle in honor of my Grandpa Bob and Grandma Betty (and other missed saints). Both my grandparents were heavily interested in politics and passionate about justice. It would break their hearts to see the state of this country. I thought about whether or not they were looking at me from heaven and hoping that I do make them proud in what I’ve done. Either way, they would have loved this play and would have been intrigued by the conversation.

Sending prayers for our Country.
