Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!

Mamma Mia, it’s Mothers’ Day! I hope all the mamas out there are enjoying their day with their loved ones!

What better film to discuss on Mother’s Day than this, especially in my family. For us, today does not resonate the same as it did in the past. Two years ago, it was literally Mothers’ Day when we all said our goodbyes to our Grandma and a day later when she left our world. Mamma Mia 2 (as I will call it) is joyful, but also deals with grief and loss, especially loss when it happens too soon.

Remembering Grandma through this film means a lot to me not only because she LOVED this film, but because I know that like Donna, she would want to be celebrated with joyful songs, dancing, pretty colors, sparkly things, and laughter. Like Donna, my grandma wanted to be remembered as someone who was strong, creative, and loved her family very much.

There is a moment in the film where Pierce Brosnan sings “When you’re gone, how can I even try to go on”. I’ve seen this moment so many times, but it hit me differently today thinking about my Grandpa. I hope Grandpa that as you find your own way to carry on that you never forget how much you are loved by your family.

Here is why I think Grandma loved both Mamma Mia movies, but especially this one: Cher. Okay, there are more reasons than Cher alone…like ABBA. Who doesn’t love ABBA?! Their music is the best! The joy of both films are contagious, and there is nothing about them that Grandma did not love!

The Mamma Mia’s are fabulous, funny, have fantastic costumes, beautiful travel aesthetics, catchy music that does a wonderful job of paying tribute to ABBA, great scripts, and terrific actors. Mamma Mia 2 has all those things AND it explores multiple timelines, perspectives, and parts of the human experience. Oh and it has Andy Garcia and Cher.

Regardless of where life has you today, I can guarantee you that either Mamma Mia film will make your day happier, and that the 2nd film especially will bring you comfort too!
