Julie & Julia

Summer vacation has started! Woo hoo!
Life without homework will give me more free time, and I’m excited to use some of it to explore multiple film themes these next couple months. Each theme will last about 1-2 weeks and cover a variety of interests I have in film.

Our first summer theme is “films for foodies”. By definition, a foodie is someone keenly interested in food, especially in eating or cooking. Well, let’s just say I’ve been a foodie for many years now! I remember as a kid I loved the food network and loved 30 Minutes with Rachael Ray! Cooking is an art, a form of therapy, and a necessity wrapped in a delicious package. Julia Child understood that well! We can’t talk about food film without thanking Julia Child as she was the one who started it all in America! Thank YOU Julia!

Julie & Julia talks about Child’s beginning with food before her TV show. If you want to learn more about her time in America filming “The French Chef”, I HIGHLY recommend HBO Max’s “Julia”.

Julie & Julia really captured the essence of Julia Child. The more I learn about Julia Child, the more I see how colorful her life was and how love was a part of everything she did. Julia Child gave us the gift of good food , the humor and delight of imperfection, and being an example of someone who never gave up…we need more people in the world who don’t give up on their dreams! Meryl Streep captures that exact part of Julia Child who brings you comfort and who you totally want to hug! Her chemistry with Stanley Tucci is great and their portions of the film is thoroughly enjoyable!

What I love about Julie and Julia is how it tells the true story of someone who’s life was changed by the art of cooking. Also how writing, learning history, and spicing up a daily routine can make life flavorful. Amy Adams is not my favorite actress, but she does a great job of being relatable in this film. She embraces both the good and irritating parts of her character, and it’s very honest.

As a film for foodies, this Julie & Julia is very satisfying! The cinematography does a great job of making me hungry and showing how beautiful food really is
