Big Night

I’m curious, has anyone ever seen or heard of this film? I had no idea this film existed until I listened to the audiobook “Taste: My Life Through Food” by Stanley Tucci, which is one of my new favorite books! Did you know that Stanley Tucci not only starred in this film but was a co-writer and co-director? I adore Stanley Tucci and that was enough of a reason originally for me to see this film.

Without giving away too many spoilers from his autobiography, it is necessary to note that one of his family’s infamous recipes is featured in this film. You’ll know it when you see it…it is a work of art and a delicious Italian heart attack at the same time! Just watching the trailer for this film makes you hungry as you see many beautiful dishes flash on the screen.

In a nutshell, this film is about two brothers who want to keep Italian eating and cooking traditions alive in America, but are struggling to keep their restaurant afloat. Their “Big Night” will either make or break their restaurant and will change their futures. I think the concept of this film is great, and I enjoy many of the scenes, but I do have some problems with Stanley Tucci’s character, Secondo. I would love to discuss these things, but I cannot do so without spoiling anything. I will say that the decisions his character makes changes the tone of the film for me. That’s why I wouldn’t own it, but would be glad to watch it once in a while if not just to drool over the food.

Regardless of my issues with the story, this film gets .5 and here’s why:

Supported by a great cast, this story is like a symphony. This concert of sorts embraces the moods created by both major and minor keys, playing with a variety of dynamics.

Shakespeare summarized it well when he said, “if music be the food of love, play on”. Although, Tony Shalhoub’s Primo could give Shakespeare a run for his money, claiming that “to eat good food is to be close to God”. Great food, music, or for that matter film can make you feel every emotion and at the same time fulfill that thing in your soul that longs for refreshing flavors and the spice of life
