SPSCC’s Carmina Burana

I was not originally planning on attending this performance, but when my friend reached out to me and invited me to join her, I couldn’t say no. I love the way things work out, and I am grateful I got a chance to attend this performance.
This is my second time seeing a group perform Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana”, and my brain couldn’t help but compare the versions a little bit. Ironically enough, both performances used the same baritone, and just like last time, his voice took my breath away and completely enchanted me.
There were some creative choices made for this performance that really enhanced the audience experience. I love the comedic things that the soloists did, and the way they interacted with one another. There was a hilarious moment between the soloist and the chorus that really made me laugh. I wasn’t expecting to laugh when I watched this, and it was such a lovely surprise. The comedy created camaraderie, and the camaraderie displayed a natural sense of community that felt entirely organic and refreshing.
The last time I saw “Carmina Burana”, the music director chose to have an alto soloist. SPSCC chose to use a countertenor instead. I’ve always wanted to hear a countertenor perform live, and now I got a chance to. His voice completely amazed me. I loved it!
My only complaint would be that the performance got tiring after a while. I think it had less to do with the performers and more to do with the piece itself. It’s an hour long, and there are moments that are simply less interesting than others. I’m impressed by the singers and their dedication to their performance, also high five to the choir for not locking their knees…that was always the thing that made me most worried as a singer because I didn’t want to faint. No fainters, woo hoo!
Overall, I’m glad I went, good job SPSCC!
