Local singer, songwriter and guitarist Lisa Robischon has released her new album, “The Hands of Time."

The album gently soothes your soul, bringing the comfort of home. Typically, I am not a fan of country music, but Robischon’s combination of country and folk traditions feel earthy and innately human, and I cannot help but be drawn to it.

I found myself singing along, even harmonizing to the songs, and the layers of sound and experience resonated with me and deepened my sense of love, hope and gratitude. If mountains could sing, I imagine they would sound something like this.

Audiences will be able to see Robischon perform live at New Traditions on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 5 p.m. Get your tickets here.

Lisa’s story

Playing guitar and writing music since she was 14, Robischon’s story with music is one that we can all relate to in one way or another.

At 15 years old, Robischon wrote a song that her parents sent to a record label in Nashville. The company liked it and wanted to meet her, and her family drove across the country to see what opportunities awaited.

After chatting, the company wanted to do a demo, but they wanted to charge $6,000, which the family could not afford. That did not stop Robischon from singing all through high school and winning national awards.

Within the span of a decade or so, Robischon studied music in college for two years at the University of Idaho, got married and had children, got divorced, lived the single mom life of working two jobs and raising kids, got remarried, performed at Seattle Folk Life Festival multiple times, and graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a degree in vocal music.

From there, Robischon has continued to make music a priority in her life and continues to create music, make friends and teach voice lessons.

What makes Robischon’s story so refreshing and inspiring is that it's realistic and honest, and she keeps going, not letting anything get in her way. Robischon keeps making music and creating art from real life experiences, and isn’t that the best part of being human?

The album

“The Hands of Time” is a compilation of original songs and covers of beloved classics, including Fats Waller’s “Honeysuckle Rose” and the folk song “Wayfaring Stranger.” Personally, I prefer her original songs.

“My lyrics tell stories from my life,” Robischon commented. “Stories of maybe heart break or of feeling homesick from the town I grew up in in Idaho and our old property.”

Robischon’s memories take her back to fields of wheat, dirt roads and other aspects of life in the country. That spirit of reminiscence and nostalgia definitely are felt through each note of each song.

In a world that's as crazy as ours, it’s nice to go home because there’s no place like home. Robischon got to go back to her old home property for the album photoshoot, adding another meaningful element to creating the album.

Audiences will be able to hear the stories behind Robischon’s songs during the concert performance on Sunday. Here’s a sneak peek of one of the stories.

The story behind 'If He Knew About You'

This story begins when Robischon worked at Bon Marsche a long time ago. Working for them for 10 years, she got to know everybody, including her manager, who was a real sweetheart. Here’s where it gets fun: the manager was having an affair with the maintenance guy, and they were both married!

Robischon reflected, “They were both real sweet people, and I really liked them both a lot. Each of their spouses would come and visit their partners once in a while.”

She continued, “I liked all the parties involved a lot, but I thought gosh what a mess it would be if somebody knew what was going on. If her husband knew, it would just break his heart.”

As Robischon was working in the stock room, it hit her that this would make a great song. So instead of doing the inventory back there, she took a moment to write down this song. Many years later, the song lives on and we get to enjoy it.

Everyone from the story has passed on, but this song reminds us of the power of music — it keeps all these stories alive and lets funny memories live on for generations.

Come experience this song and others at her concert on Sunday. You can get your tickets here. “The Hands of Time” album is available on many music streaming platforms, including YouTube and Spotify.
