Only one essay left until I can begin my summer vacation. Either to my advantage or disadvantage, it is due in two short days. Here’s my problem: writers block. Anyone been there before?
Similar to Gene Kelly and Michael Beck, I’m in need of some divine inspiration to pull me out of my creative rut and help me add some character to my writing. Can Olivia Newton John help write essays about the Civil War?
This film is truly magical and full of joy! Here’s what my Grandma Oma loved about this film: it’s incredibly unique, nostalgic, full of bright colors, sparkles, great costumes, really fun sets, catchy music, and love. It embraced both old Hollywood and the big band era along with the quirky side of early 80’s trends. The choreography itself is mesmerizing with clever use of roller skates! It’s one of those kind of films that make you wish you were as great of a dancer or skater as the cast!
Olivia Newton John is absolutely adorable in this film and Gene Kelly is endearing! Did you know that this was was his last film? This was where he started to mentor his protégé Kenny Ortega, who is one of the more famous choreographers and directors of my generation. There are a lot of fascinating aspects to their relationship, and if anyone wants to learn about it, let me know! I did a project about Gene Kelly and Kenny Ortega was a part of it!
Xanadu is a relatively simple story with a lot fun elements. This can be both a comfort film and a delightful escape from reality. One of my personal favorite scenes in this film is an animation sequence that reminds me a lot of Disney’s Fantasia! Paired with the music, this animation is just so happy and makes the idea of falling in love seem even more magical!
Watching this again tonight brought delight to my heart, and I can’t recommend it enough!
