When Harry Met Sally

Initially, I was hesitant to write a review about this film because who doesn’t know how great it is? Then I thought “oh yeah, I didn’t even like this film until two years ago”. So if there is someone out there who hasn’t seen this film before, you are not alone and hopefully this review will create a new tradition for you. I love to spend time with Harry and Sally this time of year! Here’s why:
The soundtrack is iconic. Full of favorites from the great American songbook, this film brought the best music back into public memory. A good portion of the soundtrack is performed by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald who are the best duet partners the world has ever seen. Every song makes each moment more romantic and quintessential, and outside of this film is best enjoyed on a nature walk and enjoying the autumn leaves.
Beyond the soundtrack, this film leaks autumn through its fantastic sweaters and blazers as well as the gorgeous autumn scenery shown throughout the film. In general, this film is very calming and cozy and wonderful with a blanket and a cup of tea.
What I love about this film is it’s script. The comedy is subtle (mostly) but effective, and I find myself quoting it often (even if only in my stream of consciousness). The characters are quirky, strange, and have both lovable and irritating traits. The conversations they have are poetic, but don’t feel so premeditated that they aren’t organic. Harry, Sally, and all other characters are endearing, but not so over the top gorgeous that they lose their real person qualities. The timeline of this film is spread throughout many years, which is so realistic because sometimes, great friendships or relationships take time. I’m someone who tends to want to rush everything, and the pace of this film is a great reminder that real life isn’t always so quick. Also, the way the characters change AND change their minds over time is a reflection of real life and how people are capable of changing their minds and perspectives. This film shows how the smallest, perhaps most seemingly insignificant moments can change your life. Isn’t that such a lovely thought?
