How can one film be romantic, historical, calm yet intense, explore the idea of altered reality, and involve time travel without any sci-fi elements? The script, set design, acting, and chemistry are all absolutely powerful.

“Somewhere in Time” is an impactful film because of the way it discusses the idea of true love. True love is a spiritual, life altering endeavor that can make you willing to do anything in order to just breathe the same air as the person you love…even travel through time. The spiritual aspect of love is explored in this film with the idea that deep in your spirit, you can feel a connection with a person even though there are barriers or elements that would make the connection nonsensical or impossible. It’s beyond love at first sight, it’s destiny.

Yes, I recognize this sounds very corny, but that’s what’s amazing about this film…it’s not corny in the slightest. The story is packed with all these different emotions that genuinely leave you breathless.

The emotional depth of this film is mainly carried by the late Christopher Reeve. Even in the film’s first five minutes, you sense the spiritual connection and you can see it on his face. His expressions are so genuine and honest. He’s not acting like the connection is there, he genuinely feels it and so do you.

Did you know that Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour actually fell in love while making this film? Throughout filming, they had a passionate relationship that ended when Christopher Reeve found out his ex girlfriend was having his baby. The romance ended and he did the honorable thing by trying to make things work with his ex. Here’s the craziest part: the day Reeve and Seymour found out about the baby was the day they filmed the penny scene. The love and emotions were real…how wonderful is that?
