On the Basis of Sex

What better way to celebrate #womenshistorymonth than with the queen of law herself Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Her story sounds almost too inspirational to be true. During her lifetime, Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought gender discrimination and stereotypes. What’s so incredible was that she was a mom, a wife, a professor, and a lawyer all at the same time. Just one of those roles alone can be difficult, but she proved that a woman can be anything and EVERYTHING she wants to be. I’m sure there are many people like me who wouldn’t be able to pursue their dreams and passions if it wasn’t for trailblazers like her who made a way for us to. The best part is, she didn’t fight for gender discrimination for women alone, but for men too. Male stereotypes aren’t talked about quite as often in society or law, but she being the master of details stood up for all.
This film does an incredible job of honoring her legacy and sharing her story. The actors chosen were amazing in their roles and the movie felt very honest. Typically, biopics emphasize the worst traits in people, but what this movie did was embrace her faults and show how she overcame them. With that being said, this film found the divine balance in depicting Ruth Bader Ginsburg as both the brilliant trailblazer and as a lawyer who was continually learning throughout her life. Best of all, she embraced her quirks and used them to help people find justice. This is credited not only to the actors’ performances, but to the script, the directing, the soundtrack…anything and everything that went into this film.

Tomorrow (March is International Women’s Day! I will be busy celebrating women’s progress by going to school and counting my blessings for the opportunities I have been given to learn and even be allowed to be a political science (and history) major. Wish me luck: I’m designated discussion leader in my government class tomorrow. That’s how I will be celebrating women’s day. I encourage you to celebrate not only by watching this film at some point, but by being grateful for every single right we have and for those who aim to preserve our rights.
