Mystic Pizza

The title of this film intrigued me from the very beginning. Pizza is my favorite food and I’m always ecstatic when I hear the words “we are having pizza for dinner”. Sensational pizza, or dare I say, mystic pizza is rare, but enjoying it can be a divine experience. The greatest thing about pizza is that it is versatile, and perhaps that’s why most people love it. However, unlike actual pizza, the film “Mystic Pizza” is an acquired taste.
Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of reasons why I think everyone should at least give this film a chance. For instance, this is one of Julia Roberts’ earlier films. Another reason is that it takes place in Mystic, CT during Autumn and the scenery is gorgeous…so are everyone’s sweaters haha. The classical score suits the tone of the film perfectly along with the variety of classics featured on the soundtrack including Perry Como’s “Don’t Let the Stars Get in Your Eyes”.
Someone’s ability to enjoy “Mystic Pizza” can be determined by whether someone can still enjoy a film even as the characters constantly make stupid decisions and embarrass themselves. Many film plots feature these concepts, but some forms of it can be uncomfortably realistic or result in light melancholy. With that in mind, this is a coming-of-age story about three girls in their early twenties who each learn something new about being a woman. They laugh, cry, get mad, learn lessons the hard way, and have their hearts broken all while working at the world’s most idyllic pizza place. Speaking of that, did you know you can visit the real restaurant? How fun is that?
Through it all, the bond between these three women and their boss Leona only grows stronger. Living in a world that encourages separation, isolation, and superficial relationships, I love that this film encourages strong relationships and community. Everyone needs a good support system to love them through every season, and it is a blessing to be part of a support system for others.
