I can already imagine what most of you are thinking, and no it is absolutely not too early to watch this film. Here’s why:
A few years ago, on a cloudy summer day, my family and I were trying to decide on a movie to watch. Faith suggested “Little Women” and justified it by calling it not only a Christmas classic, but “a summer movie too”. We were all in the mood for it, but my mom and I still mocked her a bit for two reasons: 1). It’s fun 2). “Little Women” is a Christmas movie. However, as we watched the film that afternoon, we realized how the film does go through a variety of seasons. To this day, I’m not sure if the three of us actually agree on whether or not this is a “summer film”, but I will say that I personally watch this all the time and on a variety of occasions. Today, I enjoyed this film while I did my history homework, which is a relatively normal custom for me.
People often ask me what my favorite films are, and this is in the top 10. Combined with lighting, color scheme, and set design, the cinematography is so beautiful that you want to step into and live alongside the March family. Also, the classical score is both lovely and comforting.
Louisa May Alcott’s novel “Little Women” is one of the best pieces of literature ever created and has inspired generations of women. With that, the audience of any film adaption of this story has naturally high standards and hopes. Of all the versions, I think this one is the truest to the overall novel. Sure, it does not include as many plot details as Greta Gerwig’s, or have Florence Pugh, but the overall tone is still the best. Speaking of actors, Winona Rider, Susan Sarandon, Gabriel Byrne, Trini Alvarado, Kristen Dunst, and especially Christian Bale are the best versions of the characters they play. Basically, I will never not be in love with Christian Bale’s Laurie. He’s just so lovable in every way!
Films that pay great attention to details and are full of heart are rare and wonderful! Every time I watch this film, I notice something that I haven’t observed before. Considering the fact I’ve seen this film about a million times, that’s incredible!
