Funny Farm

Today in class, something hilarious happened. I would tell you the story, but it was one of those occasions where you had to be there. Anyways, the instance was so funny that I actually laughed out loud…hard and for a long time. Tears streamed down my smiling face and in that joy filled moment, I was reminded of how good it feels to laugh. Think about it, when was the last time you genuinely laughed?
Laughter is addictive, and tonight I’m watching one of my favorite fall time films that is always good for a laugh. “Funny Farm”…it’s in the name!
Let me start off by saying I’m picky when it comes to Chevy Chase. Yes, I think he’s funny but sometimes he can be over the top. This is one of the four films of his that I enjoy because his comedy feels genuine and relatable. It’s not just Chevy Chase though, everyone in this film is funny!
Funny Farm encapsulates so many of the ironic things about being American. Like how we can all be American, but be so different. This film also captures what I imagine small town New England country life to be like: full of quirkiest characters, gorgeous sceneries, and indescribably weird, hilarious, and charming moments. I may not live in the New England countryside, but there are still many moments that feel relatable which makes the joke even funnier.
Being an 80’s Chevy Chase film, there is a specific tone to this film. However, it is balanced out by the mellow soundtrack and serene Autumn scenery or the gorgeous set design accentuated by the interior decorating. There is a nostalgia that exists in this film that reaches beyond the 80’s and into Norman Rockwell paintings. Watch the film and you’ll see what I mean.
I love this film and how some moments you feel bad for certain characters, other moments are painful as you feel irritated with the stupidity of the characters, and then afterwards you just laugh at them. It’s delightful.
I hope you all enjoy this “Funny Farm”!
