Anne of Green Gables & The Sequal

Five or so years ago, I began a tradition: at the end of each summer, I watch these films in one day to welcome the new season . Typically my family & good friends join me! I love introducing people to these films & watching their reactions! Kevin Sullivan's 1980's films are the best adaptations of this story. Here's why:

First & foremost, there will never be a better Anne Shirley than Megan Follows. Her voice, demeanor, & charisma are perfect for L.M. Montgomery's heroine. I can say the same about Jonathan Crombie's boyish charm & loving countenance as Gilbert Blythe. I can go on about each actor, everyone is perfect for their roles!

In comparison to all the other versions of this story, these films have an indescribable warmth. This warmth is felt in the film's lighting, in each actor's performance, the musical score, set designs, & costumes. The cinematography plays a significant role in this as well in capturing the actors' expressions & in the attention to the gorgeous Canadian landscape. The seasonal nature shots are lovely...which is why I splurged and bought the first film on Blu-ray. Trust me, it was worth it...especially for the autumn scenes.

If you are a fan of the books, you will notice that the sequel gets creative. However, I think all the changes made were appropriate & did a great job combining books 2-4. All of those books would need their own movies/series. That said, I'm genuinely impressed with the sequal's script.

These two films are flawless!

PS: I was so sad the day Jonathan Crombie died; Rest in Peace.

PS #2: Did you know that the actress who plays Diana Berry (Schuyler Grant) is Katherine Hepburn's great niece & that Hepburn herself was involved in getting her in these films? Film history is cool!

PS #3: I pretend that the third film "The Continuing Story" does not exist. If anyone wants to know why, message me.

PS #4: If anyone has seen the T.V. series "Road to Avonlea" by the same director, reach out to me, I would love to hear your thoughts!
